NEWS FROM NOTRE DAME REGIONAL

Notre Dame Living Stations of the Cross

The eighth-grade students from Notre Dame Regional School donned authentic garb and portrayed the Living Stations of the Cross on Friday, March 19. "It's been a tradition here at Notre Dame and it will continue," Melissa Knapp, advancement director, said. "I think it brings so much meaning."

For more than 14 years, the students in the eighth grade at Notre Dame have re-enacted the condemning and crucifixion of Jesus Christ as a lesson, remembrance and prayer during Lent, said Lucille Doyle, the school's religious teacher.

On Friday, the 19 students in the eighth-grade class held the re-enactment first in the morning for their peers in kindergarten through seventh grade and then in the evening for school families and local residents, Knapp said. It was the first year the school held an evening event, she said. Both events took place at St. Michael's Church in Minotola.

Seventh grade students in Mrs. Patricia Simone’s Language Arts class used their Summer Reading assignment of  “Where The Red Fern Grows” to get to know their new classmates and learn to work together to complete a task.  Their assignment was to imagine the book was being made into a movie production and they were to create the promotion posters.  After completing the posters the groups gave oral presentations to the class.  Pictured are two new students to the class Joseph Quinlan and Rhianna Gilliam along with Shelby McCarty.

Alex's Lemonade Stand Oct 17, 2009

NOTRE DAME HOSTS ALEX'S LEMONADE STAND

On Saturday, October 17th Notre Dame will host Alex's Lemonade Stand from
8am - 4pm at the yard sale at the Landisville campus. The students at Notre
Dame Regional School in Newfield & Landisville and their families are all
about helping others. Our older students were upset when a parent in our
school was diagnosed with cancer, and our younger students felt the pain of
their 2nd grade classmate this past school year when she was diagnosed with
cancer. We've done fundraising within our school community to help Jim &
Kameron, and now our children wanted to help more people. We're very excited
to get involved with Alex's Lemonade Stand! Just because we are a small
school (PK3 - 8th grade totals under 150 children) we know how to rally
together and raise money like a big school!

NDRS FORMS BOND WITH FAMILY SUCCESS CENTER IN VINELAND

During the Holiday Season, the Student at Notre Dame Regional School contacted the Family Success Center in Vineland wanting help a family in need  with food and gifts for the holiday.  Community Outreach Specialist, Ann Mulvihill suggested age appropriate gifts for a family in need. The response from the Notre Dame School Family was overwhelming. Instead of helping one family the amount of food donations, gifts, and gifts card where enough to bring a brighter holiday to seven families. With the holidays behind them and the economy in a slump the Family Success Center was recently faced with bare shelves in the food pantry and families in need. A phone call was made to Notre Dame and a plan was formed. Notre Dame Students had been practicing for months for the production of Beauty and The Beast Junior under the direction of Mrs. Karen Jeffers, Mrs. Judy Cirucci and Mrs. Drema Lagrotta.  Prinipal Dr. Mary Alimenti made the student body and parents aware of the need of the Success Center and asked for a donation of a nonperishable food item as admission into the play. Once again, the Notre Dame Regional School Family showed their commitment to serving others. The shelves in the pantry are now stocked again and a bond has been forged between The Family Success Center of Vineland and The Notre Dame School Family that will only continue to grow.

Pictured are eighth grader Adam Jadick who played the Beast/Prince, Ann Mulvihill Outreach Specialist with the Family Success Center of Vineland, and Karley Jeffers who played Belle.

NOTRE DAME REGIONAL SCHOOL HONORS WALK-A-THON ORIGINATOR
by Melissa Knapp, Advancement Director, tobipd@comcast.net

Notre Dame Regional School is excited to announce that “The Frank Valla Walk-a-thon for Technology” will take place on October 15, 2008 at 10:00 am at our Newfield campus. Originally called the Walk-a-thon for Technology, this event was renamed in 2007 to honor Mr. Valla for his tireless dedication to Notre Dame School.

Frank Valla served as the President of the NDRS School Board for several years. During his tenure, Mr Valla saw a need to purchase technology equipment for his children’s school. To achieve the goal of supplying both schools with state of the art computer labs, Internet connectivity, and computers in each classroom, Mr. Valla organized a walk-a-thon. The students in kindergarten through eighth grade gather pledges and walk as a school throughout Newfield in an effort to raise money for the technology program.

Because of Frank’s vision, the school has been able to set up and maintain computer labs in both the Newfield and Landisville campuses. The walk-a-thon funds have also ensured that there is a computer in every classroom. Sadly Frank Valla passed away in 2007 from cancer. However his wife Kathy and their children Karen and Frank continue to support Notre Dame Regional School. The Valla Family donations recently paid for the automated family calling system installed in Notre Dame in December of 2007, and they donate the cost of the lawn care service at the Early Childhood Center.

As a result of the kindness and generosity of the Valla Family, the school family showed their appreciation for the Valla Family’s commitment by renaming the walkathon, now in its 15th year, in Mr. Valla’s honor. The family of Frank Valla will be presented with a plaque celebrating 15 years of success and an official “The Frank Valla Walk-a-thon for Technology” T-shirt honoring the former School Board President.

Through the school’s efforts the spirit and drive of Mr. Valla’s dream will continue to shine for years to come. If you would like information about the walkathon contact Melissa Knapp, Advancement Director at 856-207-4965 or e-mail Melissa at tobipd@comcast.net.

LOCAL CHILDREN’S AUTHOR MOTIVATES YOUNG WRITERS
Esther W. McQuaid to Visit Notre Dame Regional School

by Melissa Knapp, Advancement Director, tobipd@comcast.net

Notre Dame Regional School, Newfield campus, is excited to host a writing workshop on October 16th, 2008 at 9:00 am . Notable children’s author Esther W. McQuaid, a Vineland resident, will bring her interactive presentation to the second, third and fourth graders of Notre Dame Regional School. She will use her passion for writing along with props, to motivate the children in an exciting writing workshop.

As part of the workshop, the children will participate in writing a short story as a group. McQuaid is a retired teacher of seventeen years. She has a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Rowan University and is also a Certified Parent Educator. As an educator, Mrs. McQuaid often found herself frustrated by the lack of new materials on the subject of transportation.

Inspired by the void in learning materials McQuaid wrote her own poem “Transportation” and then published the poem in a book format. McQuaid is published by SRA/McGraw-Hill as part of the “Imagine It!” reading curriculum program.

The children of Notre Dame will benefit greatly from McQuaid’s hands-on approach and her enthusiasm. The workshop will encourage the students to start writing at any age to fulfill their dreams.
